My Underarm Laser Experience and Cost!

Hey Everyone

Today’s post is a little different. It’s not related to any beauty or makeup products but rather with my experience with Under Arm Permanent Hair reduction. I was so sick and tired of waxing/shaving the underarm area. It only looked nice and clean for about 3 days after which tiny little hairs started popping out making it look darker. I felt like I could never wear any of the sleeveless or short sleeved clothes I had. Also to get it waxed, it needs to be a little long so they can take them out easily. That had just become so much of hassle. I decided to consult my dermatologist and ask him for a package for permanent Hair removal in the underarm area. He gave me a package for 6 sittings and we got started.

The cost for 6 sittings was INR 12000. If I felt like I needed another sitting after I was done with my package, that would be for INR 500. I got it done from Dr.Walia’s Skin and Laser Clinic in Mohali. I had always heard that laser isnt too painful and my doctor told me the same but I’ll be honest with you, the first sitting hurt like hell. I literally had goosebumps for 15 minutes after the session was done. That might be because I had very thick hair in the underarms and to burn them off it had to hurt.

The doctor first analyses the thickness and length of the hair and then selects an appropriate laser setting. The first one is obviously always very strong. They start off by shaving the underam completely and then making sections on it with the help of a pen. Afterwards they go in over the different sections one by one to get all the hair. As soon as they start, you get a sensation like someone has pricked you with a pin and you can literally smell the hair root burning. One by one the laser is moved onto the different areas. The laser that was used on me was the ND:Yag laser. Now I’m not very familiar with the laser terminologies but I think this laser hurts a bit more than the new ones that are coming out lately. If you decide to undergo underarm laser, you have to be prepared for the fact that the first few sessions will hurt unless your laser is a different type which I will talk about later.

After the first session is done, your hair grows back as the same pace as it did before the laser but after about 4-5 days it starts falling off. All of the hair still may not come out just after the first sitting. I was told that for the face, the sittings are to be done every month and for the rest of the body it has to be done every 2 months. So a package for 6 sittings will go on for a year unless you go in every month. I think you should keep a 2 month gap between the sittings as the effects appear to be better and they last longer.

Talking about the non painful laser – I had one session done with a different type of laser machine which had a bigger rounder head. That was supposed to be a painless one and I have to say it was so much better and comfortable. If you dont like the pain that occurs in these treatments I suggest you ask the type of machine at the dermatologist/salon where you’re getting this done. If it’s a pen like laser with light that falls on you, it will hurt for the first 2 sittings. Afterwards, the hair strand shrinks so the pain is lesser although you always feel the pricking sensation. When they’re doing the laser on you, they also have a pipe with lots of cold air coming out to soothe the area of the laser. You can obviously ask the person doing it to stop for a few seconds if it hurts.

After every session, you’re supposed to use a steroid cream prescribed by the doctor for about 2 days so it can help your skin heal. After every sitting you will notice that the hair grows back smaller and thinner than before. Also to note, you are not supposed to user a hair removal cream or wax in between your laser sessions. You can obviously use a razor but dont use it for atleast a week before the laser sitting is scheduled because then they wont be able to know the exact laser setting to be used.

Coming to the effects after 6 whole sittings – Hair is still there but it is so thin that it’s almost unnoticeable. I have to look very closely to be able to see it. I think this is the thing that you need to keep in mind – your expectations. If you expect there will be absolutely no hair then I believe you might be disappointed. Probably if you do a lot more sessions that may happen but I dont think that is recommended as there is a limit to which you can push your body. I also expected there will be no hair but I am in no way disappointed as whatever is still there is sooo tiny and thin you can not even notice it . I shave once every few weeks when I plan to wear sleeveless clothes. Another thing to note – Laser will make no difference to the colour of your underarm so dont expect it to look fairer or more even toned after a laser. Mine looks the same as it did when I used to get it waxed.

Overall, I am pretty happy with my experience. I think I got a good package considering I got it done by a dermatologist rather than at a beauty salon etc by people who are not very sure on what they are doing. I may get one sitting every year to keep the effects long lasting. I think if thick dark hair is your problem, then do give it a try. I have not experienced any side effects at all. Not sure how it would be in a few years though 😛

If you have any questions feel free to ask me 🙂

Love –

Harman

P.S – This post is in no way sponsored, neither did I get any discounts etc by talking about it.

  1. very informative post harman…i also face the same problem. However, i have a very sensitive skin and I am scared to go laser…I think I should visit a good derma and get this done to avoid this waxing/shaving etc…. 12k sounds very fine for this..i remember in HYD, some clinics were charging 30 k for 6 sittings and some of my friends did that too… For them , results were good too…

    • Hi Renji. Thank you 🙂 I think visiting a Derm is a good idea so he can guide you accordingly. 30k is a lot for Laser of such a tiny area. I think I got a pretty good deal on this. I would totally recommend 🙂

  2. i have been thinking of getting laser too but im quite scared of the pain and everything…i hope one day i get the courage and i do it!

  3. This post was much needed Harman! Every time I am crossing Kaya, I stop for a while read the laser-hair removal banner, think a little over it and pass! 😀 I am really scared about the pain I’ve to bear. I would rather stick to waxing! 🙁
